Rare images of the snow that covered the southern United States

“A snowstorm like no other.” From South Carolina to Texas, the southeast of the United States was hit by an exceptional weather event, between Tuesday January 21 and Thursday January 23, paralyzing airports, blocking roads and killing at least 10 people. According to ABC News, the victims died from traffic accidents or hypothermia: seven deaths were reported in Texas, two in Alabama and at least one person in Georgia.

In the Atlanta area, DeKalb County officials declared a state of emergency Wednesday and urged all residents to take shelter due to “severe winter weather conditions.” More than 100 cars were reported stuck on the roads, preventing crews from responding to emergencies. And this, while many regions have experienced record snowfall for at least 130 years. Florida even recorded the most snowfall on record, with 25 centimeters of snow in Milton.

Cold records

No new snow episodes are expected this Thursday, but unprecedented negative temperatures (-32°C in Davis, West Virginia) are keeping the snow on the ground and new cold records could be broken today. From Texas to South Carolina, 11 million residents are still on alert as fires continue to consume California.
