Israel has repeatedly stated that it does not want to attend celebrations after the Palestinian prisoners return home.
“As part of preparations for the release of Palestinian terrorist prisoners in Judea and Samaria, we warn against participating in riots and armed marches that support terrorism. Anyone who participates in such terrorist acts risks a danger,” warned the spokesperson for the Israeli army to Arab media. He issued the warning on Sunday evening, as the release of prisoners from Ofer prison, north of Jerusalem, was expected at any time.
Of the first group of 90 prisoners released on Sunday, a dozen of them were escorted by special police units before being released in East Jerusalem. These ex-detainees had, according to sources on site, to promise in writing not to celebrate their release from prison, nor to invite members other than their families to their home.
Detainees from the West Bank, on the other hand, were welcomed with popular jubilation. “I came to celebrate the people who are going to be released,” says Ahmad, in Beitunia, a suburb of Ramallah, upon the arrival of the white Red Cross bus which repatriated the ex-detainees.
-“I have empathy for them, I have been in prison myself and I know what happens there. The treatment is very bad: no food, nothing to drink, no blankets . You are suffering, in prison. My son is imprisoned and I am worried about him. He is a pharmacy student. His lawyer told us that he had scabies and he had no medicine. “Even the lawyer can’t visit him.” he relates.
