Just after his inauguration, Donald Trump signed several decrees to lay the foundations of its policy. The 47th President of the USA does not want to waste time. His slogan during the presidential campaign was: “Make America Great Again”. He intends to respect this leitmotif for the greatest happiness of his supporters.
The real estate mogul doesn’t know political correctness. When he doesn’t like something he says it without batting an eyelid. Among the battery of measures he has just put in place is that of suspending American development aid for 90 days.
Donald Trump justifies this suspension by the need to reexamine the effectiveness of aid programs and their alignment with the strategic interests of the United States. “US foreign assistance is not aligned with US interests and, in many cases, is contrary to US values”declared the American president, in his own style. This declaration suggests a pragmatic, even utilitarian, approach to international relations, where development aid would be evaluated in terms of its direct benefits for the United States. According to data from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), overseen by the State Department, American foreign aid reached $68 billion in 2023.
This represents an important lever for bilateral relations with many developing countries. This 90-day freeze could have immediate repercussions in several regions of the world, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Middle Eastwhere American funding supports health, education and fight against poverty projects. As indicated above, the 47th President of the USA will strive to preserve American interests.
-During his first mandate he did not hesitate to launch a trade war against China. At that time, international stock markets had been completely disrupted. By signing the decrees withdrawing the United States from the WHO and the Paris climate agreement, the real estate mogul shows that America comes before everyone else in its governance program.
