What will ski competitions look like in Switzerland in 2050? A “Snow Summit” organized by Swiss-Ski and BKW took place this week in Interlaken to try to answer this question. The thoughts are only just beginning, but the environment is rather optimistic.
Although the consequences of climate change are already visible today in Switzerland, ski competitions are not threatened, assures Swiss-Ski. While climatologists predict that the snowfall limit could rise by 300 meters, the organization wants to be reassuring.
“Even if the snow goes up 300 meters, there will still be snow in ski resorts located at 1800 or 2000 meters above sea level,” indicates the strategic projects manager at Swiss-Ski, Marlen Marconi, in the 12:30 p.m. the RTS. “There will therefore always be enough snow, which we can consolidate with artificial snow.”
However, the competition calendar may need to be adapted, concedes the sports science researcher.
Making skiing sustainable
Aware of the impact of skiing on the climate, Swiss-Ski and BKW created Snowstainability with the aim of making winter sports more sustainable. For example, the association supported the lighting change on the Einsiedeln ski jump slope.
She also works with athletes as ambassadors, like Olympic champions Daniel Yule and Ryan Regez. “We know that athletes contribute to pollution with their travel or competitions,” explains Marlen Marconi, who is also president of Snowstainability.
It can therefore be complicated for these athletes to position themselves on the theme of sustainability, but the association gives them “a guideline for getting involved”. “And I think we will gradually achieve greater awareness,” said Marlen Marconi.
