Unmasked : what is this new Korean series available on Disney+ about?
Unmasked follows the turbulent investigations of a team of producers and journalists who work for Triggerone of the most popular investigative shows in the country. If the audiences are good, the reputation of the show is damaged when a mysterious crow reveals sensitive information about the private lives of members of the editorial staff. While she tries to save her job and her team, producer Oh So-ryong (Kim Hye-soo) must also deal with the arrival of a young recruit. Han Do (Jung Sung-il) thought he would be transferred to the editorial team of a show about animals and is shocked when he finds himself propelled into the far from rosy lives of the members of the team of Trigger.
Unmasked : light tone and investigations go well together
How far do we have to go to reveal the truth? Perhaps it’s better not to ask Oh So-ryong, the heroine of Unmasked. In the first episode alone, she makes a series of questionable decisions and does not hesitate to put herself in great danger to gather valuable information. If his methods are not very conventional, there is no denying the fact that they are entertaining. The first episode, especially, moves at a hundred miles an hour and we don’t really have time to get bored, between the action sequence and the well-felt punchline. Episode 2 is darker and creates an atmosphere more in line with the investigations the team is dealing with. Whether in chaos or in quieter moments, Unmasked succeeds in grabbing us and arousing our interest. These characters and their exchanges bring a certain lightness that we are not necessarily used to in this type of fiction. If this is at first a little destabilizing, the series ultimately finds its balance without difficulty.
-Unmasked : is the fact that the series is not recommended for those under 18 justified?
Beyond the investigations, not all of which are completed after one episode, the series is also – and above all – played out around these two main characters whose secrets create an air of mystery. Kim Hye-soo plays a heroine who is sometimes difficult to pin down: is she totally unconscious or simply very passionate? For his part, Jung Sung-il (seen in The Glory) plays a character who seems to have difficulty interacting with others, a tortured man who finds himself thrown into the thick of the investigation. We immediately have empathy for him, and a serious desire to discover his evolution on screen. As for the fact that it is not recommended for under 18s? The two episodes already available do not justify this signage, but, given the subjects covered, it is entirely possible that the sequel will not be suitable for the most sensitive.
