Trump administration to make mass arrests of illegal immigrants starting Tuesday

US President Donald Trump’s administration will carry out mass arrests of illegal immigrants across the country starting Tuesday, a senior official said.

“There will be actions across the country. Chicago is just one place among others,” Tom Homan, former director of the agency responsible for border control and immigration (ICE) and who will be responsible for borders in the Trump administration.

He was reacting to information published by The Wall Street Journal and other American media.

This would be one of the first actions taken by President Trump, who will be inaugurated on Monday. The Republican promised during his campaign to deport millions of undocumented migrants in what would be the largest expulsion of illegal immigrants in U.S. history.

“On Tuesday, ICE will come out and finally do its job. We will allow them to arrest foreign criminals. What we are saying to ICE is that you will enforce immigration law without apologizing,” added Mr. Homan, described by the new president as a “border czar.”

“You’re going to focus first on the worst, on the threats to public safety, but no one is excluded. If they are in an irregular situation, they have a problem,” he insisted.

According to The Wall Street Journal, citing four people close to the operations, the arrests were scheduled to begin Tuesday in Chicago and would last “all week,” involving 100 to 200 ICE agents.

Chicago is one of the American cities run by Democrats and which have declared themselves “sanctuaries” for migrants.

Asked by AFP, a representative of Mr. Trump did not react to this information.
