This is the first visit by a senior EU official to Syria since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad on December 8.
“Our funding will contribute to basic needs such as housing, food, clean water, sanitation, health care, education and emergency situations,” explained the official.
-The burning issue of lifting international sanctions against Syria was to be at the center of his talks.
EU foreign ministers are due to examine possible relaxations, which France and Germany favor, at a meeting in Brussels on January 27.
“In the end, we will need unanimity to lift the sanctions,” underlined Hadja Lahbib.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called for an “urgent” relaxation of international sanctions on Wednesday during a visit to Damascus.
