Donald Trump is a manipulative genius!
He launched the idea of annexing Canada, and the entire Canadian political-media class fell into a spiral of knee-jerk responses, feverish analyzes and fanciful conjectures.
We bet he reveled in the efforts made to decipher his words and was outraged by them.
Work
However, to understand Trump, just read The Art of the Deala book that he published in 1987 and in which he exposes his negotiation and even manipulation techniques.
In this work, which our elected officials would do well to study carefully, Trump indicates in particular the importance of thinking big, striking hard from the start, destabilizing and denigrating the adversary, and launching an outrageous idea to establish an anchor strategic and thus dictate the terms of the debate and impose its narrative.
His proposal to annex Canada fits perfectly into this logic.
Making Canada 51e Statehood is a deliberately absurd and improbable idea, but it allowed Trump to:
· Destabilize the political-media class by creating a climate of uncertainty and orchestrating chaos;
· Shift attention from real issues to a fictitious threat;
· Benefit from extensive media coverage and control the narrative;
· Set an anchor point that will make any subsequent compromise appear moderate and acceptable;
· Denigrate his political counterpart, Justin Trudeau, by atomizing his importance.
Trump was not looking for a rational response, but an emotional one. He wanted to ensure psychological leverage during the real negotiations, and Canada fell into the trap.
Proposition
But the game is not lost.
Rather than being outraged by Trumpian provocations, Canada has a choice. Or remain totally indifferent. Or challenge him to propose an offer of annexation that no Canadian can refuse.
One thing is certain, we must deny him the reaction he expects. Because nothing destabilizes a manipulator more than an opponent who flouts his rules!
