USA: the government further broadens the targets of its sanctions against Russia

The noose is tightening on more than 150 people and entities that Washington accuses of participating in the war led by Russia in Ukraine, particularly from China.

The outgoing government in the United States announced on Wednesday that it was taking sanctions against more than 150 people and entities that Washington accuses of participating in the war led by Russia in Ukraine, particularly from China.

“These sanctions will further limit Russia’s ability to wage this war and circumvent sanctions” already in place by the United States, the State Department said in a statement.

Last week, the American and British governments had already announced new coordinated sanctions against the Russian energy sector, in order to undermine “the Kremlin’s largest source of financing” for the war effort in Ukraine.

The sanctions put in place on Wednesday target “more than 150 individuals and entities” suspected of having put themselves at the service of the Russian military-industrial complex, according to the State Department.

This includes “dozens of companies located outside Russia that help the country circumvent our sanctions, in particular from China,” adds the ministry.

The State Department considers the Asian giant to be Russia’s “main supplier” of “sensitive products used for military purposes.”

At the initiative of the Treasury Department, sanctions are being taken in parallel against companies and individuals who, according to Washington, facilitate cross-border transactions, between Russia and China, of these products which can be used for both civil and military purposes. .

“Imports from China allow Russia to meet important needs for its defense industry,” estimates the State Department.

On Monday, official data showed that trade between China and Russia had reached a record level in 2024, a new sign of rapprochement between the two countries, despite the economic sanctions imposed on Moscow.

China, which presents itself as a neutral actor, has repeatedly refused to condemn the Russian invasion.
