Obscura is also accused of plagiarism by its former guitarist Christian Münzner

Technical death metal band Obscura, already under fire for accusations of plagiarism launched by their former bassist Alex Weber, faces new similar allegations. This time, it’s ex-guitarist Christian Münzner who accuses the band’s frontman, Steffen Kummerer, of having used riffs and song structures that he would have guaranteed not to use.

Detailed accusations

In a statement on social media, Münzner said: “I heard more tracks from the new Obscura album. There are riffs I wrote that I was guaranteed wouldn’t be used, but there they are, note for note, copied, stolen, with entire song structures.”

Münzner added that these tracks were intended for a solo EP that he planned to make after his departure from the group in 2024. According to him, these ideas are now unusable for him: “There are limits to what we can tolerate. If Nuclear Blast releases this album, they are also complicit in theft. I am not going to let this slide and explore all possible legal avenues.”

Similar precedents

These accusations are in addition to those made last week by Alex Weber. The former Obscura bassist claimed ideas he presented to the band during his tenure were used in the track Evenfalltaken from the new album A Sonicationdespite assurances to the contrary.

Weber expressed his concerns: “I’m concerned that other material Chris and I wrote for this album may also be used without our consent.”

Silence radio

Neither Steffen Kummerer nor the Nuclear Blast label have yet publicly responded to these allegations. The album A Sonication remains scheduled for release on February 7, 2025. However, these controversies risk clouding its critical and public reception.
