Nigeria: major drug seizures in Abuja and Lagos | APAnews

More than two tonnes of cannabis and shipments of cocaine and codeine were seized during operations in Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt by Nigeria’s anti-drug agency.

The National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized a consignment of 2.2 tonnes of cannabis during an overnight operation in Abuja, its spokesperson said on Sunday. The drugs were being transshipped into six vehicles at a site at a former gas station in the Kubwa district.

The operation, carried out on Saturday at 1:20 a.m., led to the arrest of a 42-year-old suspect and the seizure of a trailer truck and six vehicles. According to the agency, the shipment originated from Edo State in southwestern Nigeria.

In Lagos, officers intercepted a package containing 330 grams of cocaine concealed in jars of facial cream, destined for Australia.

In Port Harcourt, a major seizure of codeine was made on January 9 and 10 during a joint inspection with Customs. More than 338,000 bottles of codeine syrup were discovered in two containers, with an estimated street value of 1.19 billion naira (about $1.4 million).

In another operation in Lagos, authorities arrested the traditional leader of the Igunuko shrine, wanted since October 2024 for drug trafficking. Two of his accomplices had already been convicted.

The NDLEA is also continuing its awareness-raising activities in schools, places of worship and communities as part of its “War Against Drug Abuse” (WADA) program.
