(Keystone-ATS) “Around 700 activists were arrested after the A12 motorway was blocked,” said The Hague police, stressing that this demonstration called by Extinction Rebellion (XR) had “resulted in traffic jams and travel times longer for ambulances and other emergency services.”
Most of the arrested demonstrators were then released near the ADO stadium, on the outskirts of the city, according to local radio Omroep West.
The demonstration follows several similar ones held last year to protest Dutch fossil fuel subsidies.
Police maintained a strong presence with foot and horse patrols, while a drone flew overhead.
Hundreds of demonstrators had gathered at midday and marched toward the highway despite police attempts to stop them, holding signs saying “We believe in life after oil,” a correspondent noted. the AFP.
Protesters ignored the city and police’s request to stay on a vacant lot downtown. Two demonstrators also climbed a traffic beam spanning the A12 before unfurling an XR flag there.
