(Keystone-ATS) “The principle of the inviolability of borders applies to all countries, whether they are in the east or the west (…) whether it is a small country or a country very big and very powerful,” declared the chancellor before his social democratic party in Berlin, a few days before the inauguration of Donald Trump.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) directly warned the Republican billionaire this week after his threatening statements on Greenland, Panama and Canada.
Trump’s expansionist aims
The reference to Donald Trump’s expansionist aims was transparent on Saturday, even if he did not mention the name of the future American president. He also denounced “Russia’s merciless war of aggression” against Ukraine.
“The inviolability of borders is a central principle of international law. No country is another’s backyard. No small country should have to fear its big neighbors. This is at the heart of what we call Western values,” said the German leader who was speaking at an SPD congress in Berlin organized in view of the legislative elections on February 23 in Germany.
