Chairman of UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria calls for suspension of economic sanctions
The head of the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria called on Friday to suspend economic sanctions targeting the country, saying they penalize ordinary Syrian people.
“I think it is very important to suspend the economic sanctions, because these sanctions, imposed by some member states, affect the ordinary Syrian people, and not the ruling class, the government or the elites,” Paulo Sergio Pinheiro told Anadolu.
Describing the economic and social situation in Syria as “terrible” and “very bad”, Pinheiro stressed that the sanctions do not constitute “a good contribution” to the reconstruction of the country.
“Of course it will be necessary to obtain international cooperation for reconstruction,” he added.
Pinheiro also indicated that the commission is closely monitoring the situation of the 7 million Syrian refugees.
“Türkiye has been very generous, we have always praised the way in which these refugees were welcomed in Türkiye, but also in Jordan and Lebanon,” he said. “We have always stressed the importance of a safe return, with guarantees that people will not be imprisoned simply for returning to their country. »
“I think it is very important that refugees can return to their country,” he added.
Regarding continued Israeli attacks on Syria, Pinheiro said Israel had broken the 50-year-old agreement regarding the Golan Heights through these attacks.
“These Israeli strikes must stop, because nothing in international norms or law justifies pre-emptive attacks,” he concluded.
