He accuses them of filing criminal charges against him following the accidental shooting death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021. In a complaint filed Thursday, Alec Baldwin claims prosecutors deliberately covered up evidence that would have exonerated him and that they sought to prosecute him for political purposes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the lawsuit names Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies and Special Prosecutor Kari Morrissey as accusing them of tampering with evidence and conspiring to “advance “malicious the trial and conviction of Baldwin.”

The lawsuit comes two weeks after the state attorney general declined to appeal a New Mexico judge’s order dismissing the case. In a statement, Alec Baldwin’s lawyers, Alex Spiro and Luke Nikas, said the prosecution had “trampled upon” the actor’s rights.

“Criminal prosecutions are intended to be aimed at the pursuit of truth and justice, not the pursuit of personal or political gain or the harassment of innocent people,” their statement read.

“Kari Morrissey and the other defendants have violated this basic principle, time and time again, and have trampled on Alec Baldwin’s rights. We are filing this action to hold the defendants accountable for their misconduct and to prevent them from doing this to others.”

In a separate statement, Kari Morrisey said she learned in 2023 that Alec Baldwin “intended to file a civil action in retaliation.” The special prosecutor added: “We look forward to our time in court.”

Alec Baldwin’s trial in Santa Fe in July 2024 on charges of involuntary manslaughter was halted and the case was dismissed three days after proceedings began. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer, in fact, found that Kari Morrissey had improperly concealed evidence from the defense. And this trial cannot be reopened.

It has not been clarified whether Alec Baldwin will seek damages.
