The boat’s captain had already experienced a similar situation in 2020, when he rescued “the occupants of a skiff in which a woman had also just given birth”, added Salvamento Marítimo.

The Canary Islands, located off the northwest coast of Africa, are the main gateway for migrants to Spain, via a route that has gained popularity in recent years despite its danger due to strong currents and fragile rubber boats with which migrants take to the sea with little water and food.

In 2024, 46,843 migrants entered Spain irregularly via the Canary Islands, surpassing the previous record set the previous year.
