Barbados which had initially committed to the UN to send a contingent of the Barbados Defense Force (BDF) to Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/article-42217-haiti-flash-7- countries-of-africa-asia-and-the-caribbean-will-support-the-pnh.html as part of the Multinational Mission to Support the National Police of Haiti (PNH) under the aegis of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), has just suspended its decision to send troops to Haiti, announced Kerrie Symmonds, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Barbados.

Concerned that the environment in Haiti has become more dangerous, Symmonds said: […] We are aware of this and we do not want to send people into danger […] but the truth is that this has to be a properly strategically planned activity and we cannot say with certainty at the moment that there has been the level of strategic planning at the international level that we would have liked. »

Symmonds was adamant: […] for now, Barbados will only provide technical assistance “Our troops are not going anywhere at this stage. We have indicated to everyone that Barbados would like to provide technical assistance wherever possible; We are not currently thinking of troops on the ground in Haiti. When I talk about technical assistance, there may be people with specialized skills, whether in the medical field, training, etc….”

« […] we expected the Biden White House to continue to support us but with the elections America went into pause mode on Haiti. »

Symmonds stressed that the situation in Haiti cannot be put on pause and must be brought to the forefront again. Now that the Democrats have lost, they have become silent and there has been no progress, and we have to see what will happen with the Trump administration […] if we have to wait until January 20, when a new administration will be in place in the United States, so be it […] our foreign policy will be the same. We will ask them to understand that Haiti cannot continue like this. That the commitments that the United States has made before must be maintained, because we are talking about human beings and the well-being of human beings in the Caribbean. »
