Togo: drop in the cost of electricity for 200,000 households | APAnews

Togo is implementing a historic reduction in the cost of electricity, reducing the costs of thousands of households across the country.

Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé announced on Tuesday a significant reduction in the price of domestic electricity, going from 114 FCFA/kWh to 70 FCFA/kWh for households consuming less than 30 kWh over the last nine months.

This social measure, which comes into force immediately, will benefit more than 200,000 households, or around a third of the customers of the Electric Energy Company of Togo (CEET). The annual cost of this initiative is estimated at 1.5 billion FCFA, covered by the state budget.

According to a press release from the presidency received by APA, this decision is part of the government's vision of a “Togo is emerging » aimed at guaranteeing access to quality and affordable electrical energy throughout the national territory. It is part of a series of social measures intended to strengthen the purchasing power of Togolese households.

The rate of access to electricity in Togo has increased significantly in recent years. In 2021, this rate was 59%, rising to 63% in 2022, then to 66% in 2023. The Togolese authorities are targeting a rate of 70% by the end of 2024, with the objective of achieve universal coverage by 2030. This progress is supported by initiatives such as the Cizo project and the Tinga Fund, which have enabled more than 600,000 households to have access to electricity.
