A student was killed and several others injured on Friday by an assailant armed with a knife in a primary school in Zagreb, an unprecedented attack in Croatia, the official Hina agency announced, citing the Ministry of Health.
“Eight people were injured, including a child who died,” the agency said, citing the Ministry of Health.
The students and a teacher who was also injured during the attack were hospitalized, according to the same source.
The police had indicated that the attacker was “put under control” of the police. He is a 19-year-old man, according to several Croatian media.
“We are shocked, like the entire Croatian population, by the tragedy that occurred in this primary school,” said Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic.
Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomasevic, Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic and Education Minister Radovan Fuchs visited the site.
Media reports published photos of helicopters landing near the school to transport injured people.
