Last weekend, Ottavia Piana, a 32-year-old experienced caver, fell into a cave she was exploring in Italy. Stuck underground for four days, she was finally rescued.
In July 2023, Italian speleologist Ottavia Piana, 32, had already found herself stuck in this same cave, near the area where she had been for the last four days. She spent two days underground before being rescued.
Saved in the night
The speleologist was finally rescued on the night of Tuesday December 17 to Wednesday December 18, reports a press release from the peninsula’s alpine rescue. The rescuers and the young woman on a stretcher were able to reach the exit at 2:59 a.m., emergency services said.
Suffering from several fractures, she was transported to a hospital in Bergamo in the north of the country.

Injured and stuck 585 meters underground
Ottavia Piana was exploring an unmapped area of the Bueno Fonteno cave, not far from the city of Bergamo in Italy, when she fell several meters.
Injured in the face, ribs and knee, the caver found herself stuck nearly 585 meters underground, reports AP (Associated Press). Eight cavers who accompanied him raised the alarm last Saturday, so “temperatures varied between 7 and 8°C with high humidity”details the press agency.
A long rescue operation
Nearly 159 Alpine rescue technicians from 13 Italian regions took turns to help him. The operation lasted four days, as the area was so cramped, preventing the rescuers from moving forward.“One thing is certain, this type of operation takes a very long time”declared Mauro Guiducci, deputy of the National Alpine Rescue.
