Seven people hospitalized after drinking pina coladas at Fiji hotel

Seven tourists had to be taken to hospital after drinking pina coladas at their five-star resort in Fiji last Saturday, authorities in the country have confirmed.

Those affected were affected by vomiting, nausea and neurological symptoms, Fiji Ministry of Health spokesperson Jemesa Tudrave said on Monday.

According to information from British media Sky News, Fijian authorities still do not know the cause of the illness and do not know if the alcohol served in the cocktails was contaminated.

Four of the tourists affected by the illness came from Australia and one from the United States, Fiji Tourism Minister Viliame R. Gavoka said. The other two people would come from the country.

He also specified that five of the seven people had already been discharged from the hospital while two others must remain there.

Fortunately, they are conscious and in stable condition.

Mr Gavoka said Fijian authorities should have the results of the toxicology tests in the coming days.

So far, no other people have been affected by similar symptoms at the hotel premises in the days following the incident.

“Resort management assured us that they did not resort to practices such as substituting ingredients or changing the quality of drinks served to guests,” Gavoka said in a statement.
