Speaker Emeritus of the US Parliament, Pelosi injured in Luxembourg

Former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Pelosi was injured during a visit to Luxembourg to commemorate a pivotal World War II battle and was admitted to hospital.

The 84-year-old Democrat was in the Grand Duchy with a bipartisan Congressional delegation to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, her spokesperson Ian Krager said in a statement. “Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi was injured during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation,” he wrote on the social network X.

Nancy Pelosi “is currently receiving excellent treatment,” Ian Krager said, adding that “she continues to work and regrets not being able to attend other engagements” of the delegation.

Earlier in the day, Nancy Pelosi was received by Grand Duke Henri and Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume at the Grand Ducal Palace, according to the Luxembourg media L'Essentiel.

The first woman to become Speaker of the House of Representatives, she is one of the most influential Democrats in the United States and the first woman to become Speaker of the House of Representatives, stepping down last year from her second term to this position. She is still an elected representative from California and retains considerable influence on Capitol Hill.

Nancy Pelosi previously visited in 2019 to attend the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive on the Western Front during World War II. The battle raged for six weeks in the Ardennes region between Belgium and Luxembourg – bringing together 600,000 American and 25,000 British troops against 400,000 Germans – until the Allies prevailed in January 1945.
