Russia: Belka, the dog waiting for her deceased master

She will never lose hope of seeing her master again. A dog named Belka refuses to leave the place where she saw her owner fall through a frozen river on Sunday. Although the victim’s relatives systematically bring the animal home, it tirelessly returns to the scene of the tragedy. What Belka doesn’t know is that her master will never return.

The man was on a bicycle, accompanied by his dog, when he decided to take a shortcut across the Ufa River, in the Republic of Bashkiria (southwest). However, the ice was not thick enough to support the weight of the 59-year-old cyclist, who found himself trapped in the icy water. A witness was also carried away while trying to help the unfortunate man, but was able to be rescued.

Belka’s owner never resurfaced. His bike was quickly found, but it took four days – and the help of a hovercraft – to locate his body, explains the “Daily Mail”. “The search work was complicated by difficult conditions: a strong current and an unstable ice crust,” explained Kirill Pervov, head of the rescue team.

The story of Belka and his companion touched many Russians, who saw a similarity with Hachiko, the famous Akita inu dog. The animal became famous after waiting for almost 10 years at Shibuya station (Japan) for the return of its deceased master.
