But let’s not be naive, just as he was riding on the prestigious organization of the Paris Olympics this summer, Emmanuel Macron is taking advantage of the opportunity here to try to restore his image. More unpopular than ever and targeted by calls for resignation, he is struggling to recover from the political chaos caused by his surprise dissolution of the National Assembly the day after the European elections.
Michel Barnier’s government could (already) fall this week during the examination by deputies of its draft Social Security budget. In question, the RN of Marine Le Pen which enumerates its list of demands, draws its red lines and agitates the motion of confidence. By playing this card, the far right dangerously minimizes the risks of what a shutdown American style. However, the consequences of a deep budgetary crisis would be considerable as France now borrows on the financial markets at the same rate as Greece and even more than Spain or Portugal.
