Teenagers will no longer be able to use beauty filters, TikTok announces

The TikTok platform will impose an age limit on the use of its beauty filters “in the coming weeks” for European teenagers who use its application.

In a press release published Tuesday, the Chinese company indicated that young people aged 18 will no longer be able to use these effects in order to ensure “their well-being” and to make exchanges “more authentic” on its social network.

TikTok based itself on a report produced by the British organization Internet Matters to make this decision. The report thus concluded that the use of these beauty filters among adolescents has an impact “on their sense of identity”, marking a clear difference between filters which aim to make people laugh and those which alter appearance.

This measure is accompanied by a series of commitments from TikTok, including the banning of young people under the age of 13 on its platform, improving the accessibility of mental health help resources, and offering supplements. information when a user searches on a sensitive topic, such as the Holocaust.

“The search will be blocked, and the user will be redirected to reliable sources on the subject,” assured Christine Grahn, the European head of public policy and government relations at TikTok.

TikTok intends to use various tools, such as artificial intelligence, to achieve its goals.

The company has not yet confirmed its willingness to move forward with similar measures on the American continent.
