One of Donald Trump’s first significant decisions, upon his return to power, could target transgender soldiers in the army. During his first term (2017-2021), the billionaire declared that the United States would no longer accept transgender people in the military due to “huge disruption and medical costs.”
This decree, which came into force in 2019, was abolished by Joe Biden when he came to power. But the return of Donald Trump could well change the situation and go further, by sending back transgender soldiers already in the army. According to the TimesDonald Trump would like to reverse the decision, which could impact 15,000 transgender soldiers.
As a reminder, he is the former presenter of Fox News, Pete Hegseth, a sexist pro-gun ex-military, who will head the Department of Defense. The veteran has positions similar to those of the billionaire, for him, transgender people would “not be deployable” and would cause “complications”. “With Pete at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice: our military will be great again and America will never back down,” commented Donald Trump.
The US military has 2.1 million personnel, including 1.3 million active military personnel. The troops are also having difficulty recruiting. This step backwards could well make the situation worse.
