The former far-right president is accused by a Brazilian federal police report of having fomented a coup attempt after his defeat in the 2022 presidential election, and of having been aware of plans to assassinate his successor.
The police report is 800 pages long, and they are overwhelming for Jair Bolsonaro. The far-right former Brazilian president is accused of “actively participated”, after his failure in the 2022 presidential election, to a planned coup d'état aimed at preventing the return to power of his left-wing successor Lula.
An operation called “Green Dagger”
The former head of state, at the helm of the country between 2019 and 2022, had also “full awareness” of an alleged assassination plan against his rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. An operation called “Green Dagger”, which also targeted vice-president-elect Geraldo Alckmin and Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes. Last week, a police operation linked to this vast investigation resulted in the arrest of four soldiers and a police officer, suspected of having fomented this triple assassination plan, which was supposed to have been carried out before the inauguration of the current left-wing president, January 1, 2023.
The report also attests that Bolsonaro had “knowingly participated” to actions intended to abolish the rule of law in Brazil. So many attempts that only failed for one reason, the document states: “Lack of support from armed police forces.”
Calls to overturn the election result
On Thursday, November 21, the Brazilian federal police recommended the indictment of Jair Bolsonaro for his attempted coup in January 2023. Thirty-six other personalities are also the subject of a request for indictment as part of this investigation.
On January 8, 2023, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters, galvanized by their favorite who had increased calls to overturn the result of the election on the pretext of fraud in the 2022 election, invaded the streets of Brasília. Several groups of demonstrators managed to enter the Supreme Court and the Presidential Palace with disconcerting ease, leading to the possibility of collusion between certain police forces and the demonstrators. More than 300 people were arrested.
