A bus plunges into a ravine: 17 dead

Seventeen people died in eastern Brazil on Sunday when a bus veered off a mountain road in Alagoas state and plunged into a ravine, local authorities said, revising the lowers a previous assessment.

The fall of the bus “into a ravine of more than 20 meters […] left 17 dead and several injured,” said the governor of this state, Paulo Dantas, in a press release published on Sunday.

Emergency services had previously reported the death of 22 people at the scene and that of a pregnant woman in hospital, according to a first press release from the Alagoas regional government.

According to Brazilian media, the bus was carrying 40 people and the accident left “dozens” injured.

The governor of Alagoas state declared three days of mourning due to the “tragedy”.

The accident occurred in a difficult to access area, a mountainous region called Serra da Barriga.
