the political class reacts to the election of Emmanuel Tjibaou at the head of the Caledonian Union

The reactions continue after the election of Emmanuel Tjibaou at the head of the Caledonian Union (UC). Between congratulations for its pragmatism and questions about the political line to come, the New Caledonian political class expresses varied expectations regarding this new role.

The election of Emmanuel Tjibaou as president of the Caledonian Union after 12 years in office of Daniel Goa sparked numerous reactions within the Caledonian political class. Member of Parliament for the second constituency and a figure known for his career in culture and dialogue, Emmanuel Tjibaou takes the lead of a party at the heart of future negotiations on the institutional future of the territory.

For Alcide Ponga, president of the Rally, this election places heavy responsibilities on the shoulders of the new president of the UC.

It is a big responsibility that MP Tjibaou has on his shoulders, because the Caledonian Union is a big movement. I think it's one of the oldest movements in , not just in New Caledonia.

The announcement of a return to discussions with the State is viewed positively by Alcide Ponga, who believes that these exchanges are expected by citizens: I think it's good to have everyone around the table. It’s something that is important and that Caledonians are waiting for.”

For Gil Brial, elected by the Loyalists, the election of Emmanuel Tjibaou raises questions about the objectives that will be supported by the Caledonian Union during future negotiations.

We hear that he is returning to negotiations, but if it is to return with the sole mandate of access to independence without taking into account the three referendums, that will not simplify things.

He also highlighted the composition of the Caledonian Union office, divided according to him between moderates and more radical activists: Which dominant will take the lead and who will be the negotiators? And above all, for what purpose?”

Victor Tutugoro, president of the Progressive Union in Melanesia (UPM), welcomed the assumption of office of Emmanuel Tjibaou, while highlighting the challenges to be met.

I would like to congratulate him on having succeeded Daniel Goa at the head of the largest independence party in the current conditions, which are not easy. It's courageous of him to take on this responsibility.
