Emmanuel Tjibaou, elected new president of the Caledonian Union

The Caledonian Union congress was held this weekend in Canala, with on the agenda in particular, the election of the new president of the independence party. It was the deputy Emmanuel Tjibaou who was elected. He was the only candidate to present himself.

This is the year of first times for Emmanuel Tjibaou. The son of Jean-Marie Tjibaou, was elected deputy for the second constituency of New Caledonia in the legislative elections of July 2024, in the midst of the insurrection crisis.

At the end of the year, during the UC congress at the Mia tribe, in Canala, he took the head of the oldest independence party in the territory and thus succeeded Daniel Goa. According to our information, he was the only candidate, elected with 144 votes out of 198.

This is the second time since 1962, since Roch Pidjot, that a Caledonian deputy has been president of the UC. The composition of the new political office is as follows:

  • first vice-president: Pierre-Chanel Tutugoro
  • second vice-president: Mickaël Forrest
  • general secretary: Dominique Fochi
  • first general secretary: Amandine Daras
  • second secretary general: Romuald Pidjot
  • general commissioner: Christian Tein
  • Deputy Commissioner General: Hervé Tein-Taouva

In his speech as outgoing president delivered at the opening of the congress this Friday, Daniel Goa spoke “of a heavy burden” entrusted to his successor. At 48 years old, Emmanuel Tjibaou, fervent defender of Kanak heritage, will have the mission of “remobilize youth.”

Thawing of the electorate, provincial elections or even the institutional future, all issues that Emmanuel Tjibaou will have to look into. He said it earlier this year, during his campaign for the legislative elections: the crisis that New Caledonia is going through is indeed the trigger for his commitment to politics.
