“It is a decision of an independent court of justice, it must be respected”insists on Saturday November 23 on France Inter the French MEP Valérie Hayer, president of the Renew group in the European Parliament, while the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister Yoav Gallant.
The French MEP explains that France is one of the hundred or so member states of the ICC and is therefore “bound by the statutes of the International Criminal Court”. The signatory states of the founding treaty of the ICC are theoretically required to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu if he enters their territory. The issuance of this arrest warrant effectively limits the Israeli Prime Minister's ability to travel abroad.
Valérie Hayer also recalls that these arrest warrants “concern people and not a country”. “We do not put a democratic state, Israel, and Hamas on the same level, which is a terrorist group which carried out these unspeakable attacks of October 7”she emphasizes.
