In the United States, an elected representative from the Republican camp presented a text aimed at prohibiting access to the toilets of the Capitol to a newly elected transgender colleague.
The toilet of discord. Recently admitted to the American Congress, Sarah McBride, elected Democrat and transgender, is the target of a text presented by a Republican representative who wishes to prevent her from accessing the women's toilets at the Capitol.
“Biological men have no business being in women's private spaces, period,” wrote MP Nancy Mace in a message on X, presenting her draft resolution.
This project, considered transphobic, provoked numerous reactions within the Democratic camp. According to Becca Balint, it is an “odious” text and “unlimited cruelty”, while Mark Pocan, head of an LGBT+ commission in Congress, estimated that “Nancy Mace’s resolution is a pathetic move to get the attention of Donald Trump and the media.”
For his part, Mike Johnson, Republican leader of the House of Representatives, played the tongue-in-cheek card, assuring that it was “an issue that Congress had never had to deal with before.”
A “maneuver” denounced
Faced with this controversy, Sarah McBride regretted this “extreme right maneuver”, which would aim to “make people forget that the Republicans have no real solution to offer to the Americans' problems”, recalling that her priorities would concern the cost of childcare, housing, health and even the right to abortion.
The rights of transgender people were among the hot topics of this American presidential and legislative election campaign.
Access to restrooms is among the topics under debate, with Republicans opposing transgender women accessing women's restrooms, claiming it would “protect” women and girls.
