In just four days, from November 11 to 14, 29 gunshot wounds were received at the “La Paix” hospital, located in Delmas 33. Despite limited operation, this establishment remains one of the few health centers still operational in the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince, while more than thirty others, including the State University Hospital of Haiti (HUEH), have suspended their activities due to widespread insecurity.
These injured people, aged 15 to 45, come from various neighborhoods such as Delmas, the Lower part of the city and surrounding areas. According to the doctor in charge, 60% of the victims are men. However, with only four functional operating rooms, the hospital is struggling to respond to the massive influx of patients.
Faced with gang violence, medical personnel are facing unprecedented challenges: shortage of medicines, lack of basic equipment and limitations in their movement. These constraints considerably slow down emergency interventions, lamented the doctor.
Meanwhile, armed violence continues to rage in the capital, leaving hundreds of families in distress and forcing a growing number of internally displaced people to seek refuge. The situation raises urgent questions about the authorities’ ability to restore security and respond to the needs of the population.
