  • The Israeli army is investigating at least 16 attacks in the northern Gaza Strip.

  • For anti-occupation NGOs, these investigations are a “concealment mechanism” and intervene when criticism multiplies and pressure increases but “do not succeed”.

  • According to other activists, these procedures would aim in particular to avoid an investigation by the International Criminal Court, whose prosecutor Karim Khan has requested international arrest warrants against Benyamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

The Israeli army is looking into 16 attacks carried out in the north of the Palestinian enclave, which could amount to war crimes, reveals the Israeli opposition newspaper Haaretz. Military operations deemed “disproportionate” or which “contravene international law”. All took place in less than two weeks, between October 21 and November 2, during raids carried out in the area of Jabalia, Beit Lahia and Beit Hanoun in the north of the Gaza Strip. Notably, the devastating attack on a five-story building in the town of Beit Lahia: one strike, 94 dead, including many women and children.

Since the start of the war in Gaza, the army has already opened other investigations into the actions of its soldiers, emphasizes Maurice Hirsh, former military prosecutor in the occupied West Bank. “This concerns 74 cases. Quite simply because it is an essential principle for the Israeli army. It does not tolerate any criminal behavior on the part of its soldiers, nor violation of international law,” assures the reserve lieutenant-colonel.
