Justice has ruled: Milan airport will now be called Silvio Berlusconi Airport, in homage to the media mogul and former owner of AC Milan. After this announcement, reactions diverged in Italy.
In Rome, planes take off from Leonardo da Vinci airport; in Venice, they land at Marco Polo airport, and in Milan, they will stop at Malpensa-Silvio Berlusconi airport.
The administrative court of Lombardy rejected the last appeals of the opposition parties, while the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini announced in July 2024 that the Milan airport would be renamed in honor of the former politician who died in 2023.

Milan airport could therefore take the name of the former Italian Prime Minister. At Terminal 1, a taxi driver exults: “I hope someone will come soon and tell me to take him to Silvio Berlusconi Airport. That would be a joy. He was an important figure in the history of Italy, in my opinion, he deserves it.”
More than a year after his death, Silvio Berlusconi is still a divisive figure in Italy. A traveler who gets off the train to enter the airport does not hide his bitterness, but he is diplomatic: “We have debated the possible name of this airport for the last 20, 25, 30 years, and we were not never reached a decision. We had mentioned very prestigious figures, like the writer Manzoni… now, at least, we have someone to dedicate this airport to, that’s already something.”
With this name, the right in power claims to have “taught the left a lesson”.
