Thirty-five people were killed and 43 others injured after a car drove into a crowd in southern China's Zhuhai on Monday evening.
Denouncing a “serious and vicious attack”, the police in Zhuhai, a town in southern China, announced the death of 35 people on Tuesday, November 12. They were killed when a car drove into a crowd Monday evening at the city's Sports Center.
The authorities also report 43 injuries, whose vital prognosis is not engaged. The driver of the vehicle is in a coma after suffering injuries, particularly to his neck. The police clarified that he “is not in a condition to undergo questioning”.
This 62-year-old man, named Fan, “forced entry” into the Zhuhai sports center “at the wheel of a small SUV” and “rushed inside, […] knocking down people who were training in the aisles. He was arrested while stabbing himself with a knife, which prompted his transfer to hospital.
Author 'unhappy' after divorce
The first elements of the investigation suggest that the man was able to take the action because of “his dissatisfaction with the division of property following his divorce”.
In response to the tragedy, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for “everything necessary” to be done to treat the injured. He also called for the perpetrator to be “punished in accordance with the law”.
