Under pouring rain, a few hundred people gathered in kyiv on Sunday for the first gay pride march since the Russian invasion, under heavy police protection due to the war and nationalist groups.
Shortly after the march was dispersed, nationalist activists protested by marching through the Ukrainian capital, shouting homophobic insults. For security reasons, the location and departure time of the demonstration were not revealed until Sunday morning.
In the end, around 500 people were counted in this essentially static march in a closed perimeter, chanting “Arm Ukraine now!” or “United towards victory!”
Among the participants were several openly gay soldiers, including soldier Petro Zherukha, 28, who was authorized by his unit to participate in Pride.
