A man attacked several Franciscan priests with a blunt object on Saturday, November 9, according to local religious authorities. An investigation has been opened.

Several priests were injured, including one seriously, in a monastery located in Valencia, Spain, on Saturday November 9, report several media including Europa Press. The suspect is currently being sought.

On Saturday, a “middle-aged man” entered the Santo Espíritu monastery in Valencia around 9:30 a.m., the Franciscan order’s Immaculate Conception province said in a statement.

The individual was carrying a “blunt object” and adopted a “violent and provocative attitude”. The members of the Franciscan brotherhood which resides in this monastery were then in their respective rooms.

Rebuffed by one of the brothers

The man attacked several Franciscan friars, but was repelled by one of them, Fray Ángel Ramón, who then called the emergency services, according to the statement.

The suspect then “fled” and is currently being sought, according to the press release.

Three priests were injured, according to the monastery. Several media, including El País, report four injured, one seriously. The latter was for a time declared dead by the Civil Guard, before rectification. An investigation has been opened, the local police and the Civil Guard have been mobilized.
