Meeting in Budapest on Thursday, a few hours after Donald Trump's victory in the American presidential election, the leaders of the European political community inevitably mentioned the war in Ukraine.
While American support for Kyiv is no longer a certainty, given the links that Donald Trump maintains with Moscow, the question of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to end the war comes back with insistence.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who does not hide his closeness to the American president-elect and to Vladimir Putin, detailed his ceasefire plan.
“The first prerequisite for any peace is communication and the prerequisite for communication is ceasefire, he says. This is the logic. So what I'm advocating is a ceasefire, which gives the warring parties the space and time to communicate and begin to negotiate peace.”
Volodymyr Zelensky's response is firm, he who repeats that he does not want to leave Ukrainian territory to the Russian invader.
Ukrainian president says calls to convince Kyiv to negotiate ceasefire are “dangerous” et “irresponsible.”
“We can't just say a ceasefire now and then we'll see. It's not viable.”he clarified, calling for obtaining “security guarantees”.
