The dystopian bestselling book The Handmaid’s Tale or The Scarlet Maid in French, which describes a totalitarian society, would have experienced a meteoric rise of more than 6,800% in its sales in the last days following the results of the American election.
The fiction book by author Margaret Atwood, which takes place in a male-dominated America, where the American Constitution is suspended and women’s rights are annulled, would have risen to the top of the ranking of the best-selling books on Amazon upon the re-election of Donald Trump as head of the country, CNN reported Thursday.
Thursday morning, the novel had experienced a sales increase of 6866% while it would have gone from 209e position at 3e in the charts as well as the 1re place in the categories of literary fiction and political fiction, according to the American media.
In this work, women’s reproductive rights are shattered, as they find themselves forced to give birth to children for the ruling class in a society struggling with fertility problems.
This is not the first time that The Handmaid’s Tale resonates on the American political scene: during the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, then at the dissolution of Roe v. Wade, women had dressed themselves in the red dress and white cap of the scarlet servant to demonstrate their disagreement.
The book also made waves again as many compared the current debate over reproductive rights to its dystopian universe, including Barack Obama’s former senior advisor, Valerie Jarrett, who told MSNBC that “women don’t do not want to participate in The Handmaid’s Tale”, according to CNN.
The author herself, a fervent activist for the right to abortion, had shared a political cartoon a few days before the elections depicting the scarlet handmaids who vote for their freedom.
The Handmaid’s Tale is not the only dystopian work that saw a jump in sales, while 1984by George Orwell, a book about pervasive government surveillance and control, and Fahrenheit 451by Ray Bradbury, which depicts a society banning books, would have seen an increase of 250% and 333% on Amazon, noted CNN.
Currently, the best-selling book on Amazon is Melaniaa memoir autobiography of former first lady Melania Trump.
