American presidential election | Republicans on track to win the Triple Crown

More than 24 hours after the elections, the results for the House of Representatives are still not known. But after winning the White House and the Senate, the Republicans maintain a comfortable lead in the counting of this third and final decisive vote.

As of Wednesday evening, there were 206 seats for the Republicans, compared to 191 for the Democrats. Only one then went from blue to red, in Michigan. You need 218 to have a majority.

Before Tuesday, in the House of Representatives, the Republicans held a narrow majority, with 220 seats to 212 for the Democrats. Three seats were vacant.

Control of the House of Representatives is crucial: it is there that laws and federal budgets are adopted. If the Republican victory were to be confirmed, this would allow Donald Trump to govern with free rein.

Why do results take so long?

Of these 435 races happening at the same time across the country, many are very close. It is sometimes difficult to see a trend emerging: a recent election in Iowa, for example, was decided by six votes.

In California, in particular, on Wednesday evening, several counties had barely exceeded half of the ballots counted. This is because in this state, many vote by mail; and ballots sent on election day are accepted even if they are received on the following days, postmarked as proof. It is therefore not uncommon for the final results not to be known for several days.
