Donald Trump becomes the second American head of state to serve two non-consecutive terms, after Grover Cleveland in the 19th century.
UNITED STATES – “ We have written history. » Donald Trump claimed this Wednesday, November 6 “a political victory never seen before”during a speech after the vote in West Palm Beach (Florida). After a first term served between 2016 and 2020, then a defeat against Joe Biden in 2020, the 45th will also become the 47th president of the United States in 2025.
Ce « comeback » – if he is confirmed – will make him only the second American head of state to serve two non-consecutive terms after Grover Cleveland. The latter, the first Democrat to enter the White House after the Civil War, was elected in 1884. Defeated in 1888 by Republican Benjamin Harrison, he was re-elected in 1892. Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th president of the UNITED STATES.
Several other presidents have served two terms, this time consecutive, like Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George Bush. Franklin Roosevelt is the only American president to have been elected four times, in 1932, 1936, 1940 and 1944. However, he died at the start of his fourth term.
For his part, Donald Trump cannot be re-elected a third time. Indeed, under the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution which came into force in 1951, presidents are prohibited from serving more than two terms, consecutive or not.
Counting is still underway in many polling stations, but a defeat for her Democratic rival Kamala Harris seems inevitable as the decisive states fall into the hands of the 78-year-old tribune.
