Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, an active volcano on the island of Flores in Indonesia, erupted on Monday, killing nine people, according to a report revised by local authorities.
The volcano erupted around midnight and a family of six was buried, local leader Petrus Muda was quoted as saying by state news agency Antara. The victims were killed when their homes collapsed due to the eruption. The other villagers fled in panic. The authorities have just arrived on site to carry out evacuations, this source added.
The government has declared a state of emergency in this region until the end of the year. The alert level has been raised to the highest level.
The volcano began showing signs of renewed activity on November 1, according to the Center for Geological and Volcanic Hazards Management. It says the eruptions have intensified over the past few days, with more seismic activity and ash fallout.
A seven-kilometer exclusion zone has been established around the volcano.
