the Valencia region on red alert, residents called to return home

This call was made late Sunday afternoon after a red alert issued earlier by the Spanish Meteorological Agency.

Five days after the torrential rains which caused floods which left more than 200 dead in the south-east of Spain, residents of the Valencia region were called to return home this Sunday late afternoon in due to a danger of further intense precipitation.

“Extreme danger. Be very careful!” warned the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which launched a new “red alert” for the southern coast of Valencia between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. It anticipates cumulative precipitation of 90 l/m², or 90 mm, in one hour.

As the first drops of rain fell on the south of the city and the sky became more and more threatening, the police warned residents by megaphone of this new alert and the risk of heavy rain and asked them to return home. , noted an AFP journalist.

The same scene unfolded in other areas of the city, such as the Torre district of Valencia.
