Netanyahu accuses Hezbollah of trying to kill him, strike kills 73 in Gaza

“Terrible news from northern Gaza, where Palestinians continue to suffer indescribable horrors under siege by Israeli forces,” denounced Joyce Msuya, the UN’s interim head of humanitarian aid.

Netanyahu’s house targeted

Earlier on Saturday, a drone was launched towards Benjamin Netanyahu’s private residence in Caesarea (center), but neither the prime minister nor his wife were there, his office said, while the army counted at least 200 projectiles fired from neighboring Lebanon.

“Hezbollah, an ally of Iran that attempted to assassinate me and my wife, made a grave mistake,” Netanyahu said in a statement. “I say to the Iranians and their partners in the Axis of Evil: anyone who tries to harm the citizens of Israel will pay a high price. »

The accusations amplify fears of military escalation in the Middle East, as Israel has repeatedly threatened to retaliate for an Oct. 1 missile attack from archenemy Iran and is waging war against both Hamas in Gaza and against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Despite the blows inflicted on these two Islamist movements with the death of their leaders killed by Israel, these allies of Iran have vowed to continue the fight against their Israeli enemy.

Hezbollah did not claim responsibility for the drone strike against Mr Netanyahu’s residence, but the Iranian mission to the UN said the Lebanese movement was behind the attack.

The war in Gaza was sparked by an unprecedented Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. In retaliation, Israel launched a devastating offensive in Gaza where Hamas took power in 2007. The next day, Hezbollah opened a front against Israel, in support of Hamas.

The Israeli army announced the death of two soldiers in northern Gaza, bringing to 357 the number of soldiers killed in this territory since the start of its ground offensive on October 27, 2023.

Continue the fight

After the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinouar, killed Wednesday by Israeli soldiers in Gaza, the movement affirmed that the fight against Israel would continue “until the liberation of Palestine.”

Sinouar is considered the mastermind of the attack of October 7, 2023 which led to the death of 1,206 people in Israel, mainly civilians, according to an AFP count based on official figures, including hostages who died in captivity.

Of the 251 people kidnapped during the attack, 97 are still hostages in Gaza, 34 of whom were declared dead by the army.

Hamas said the hostages would not be released until the Israeli offensive in Gaza “stops” which has cost the lives of at least 42,519 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to data from the government’s Health Ministry. Hamas.

Strikes in Lebanon

After a year of border firefights with Hezbollah and after having weakened Hamas in Gaza, the Israeli army moved the front of the war to Lebanon in mid-September by carrying out intense strikes against Hezbollah.

Israel, which has also been leading a ground offensive in southern Lebanon since September 30, says it wants to neutralize Hezbollah in this region to allow the return home of some 60,000 displaced people from northern Israel, the target of this movement’s rockets.

The UN peacekeeping mission (UNIFIL), deployed in southern Lebanon, accuses Israel of targeting its positions.

A UNIFIL position, “which had not been able to receive supplies since September 29 due to blocked roads” and had no water since Friday, was able to be resupplied in the evening, the force announced peacekeeping.

On Saturday, the Israeli army said it had struck Hezbollah weapons caches in the southern suburbs of Beirut. Strikes also targeted eastern and southern Lebanon, as well as an area north of Beirut.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for rocket attacks on northern Israel. Israeli emergency services reported one death near Acre.
