Veterinarians have become more expensive, despite themselves: “We manage to get by but we don’t make a fortune”

The salary cost and the development of veterinary medicine explain the increase in costs. Alongside the specialization of care, clients are increasingly demanding and tend to question the diagnosis. “We rely more and more on studies to validate the analysis and provide proof. Some people, like in the United States, are starting to sign a paper to discharge themselves.”adds veterinarian Marianne Heimann. “Besides that, there are fewer and fewer veterinarians and the younger generation favors a better balance between private and professional life. She demands a higher salary.”

Several thousand euros per year: this is how much Belgians spend on their animals

Devices like a radio developer and a scaler have a big impact on specialists’ finances. The price of analyzes has quadrupled in 10 years. That of medicines is also increasing. “Before, I asked for 25 euros per consultation. Now I am at 38 euros. Castrating a dog cost 75 euros and now I’m asking for 82 euros. There are certain things that depend on the medication.”confides a veterinarian. “We manage to get by but we don’t make a fortune.”

For a healthy dog, it takes two to three visits to the veterinarian when he is a puppy as well as the vaccine at 75 euros to which is added the price of the dewormer. The identification chip costs 60 to 65 euros. You must also plan a sterilization budget which varies between 280 euros and 450 euros depending on the size of the dog. Not to mention the annual visit to the vet. “If you buy a dog for 1,500 euros, you have to plan for three times the amount to regularly care for the animal.”souligne Marianne Heimann.

The two veterinarians recommend turning to animal insurance because the care can quickly cost money in the event of a problem.
