Social and territorial inequalities: the Senegalese government is committed

The government wants to reduce social inequalities and territorial inequities by 2050. A new public policy framework called Senegal 2050 was presented on Monday to this end.

The new framework for public policies “Senegal 2050” presented on Monday in Diamniadio, near Dakar, aims to reduce social inequalities by considerably lowering the rate of monetary poverty and territorial inequities through the creation of economic development poles on the whole country.

“Social inequalities will have been considerably leveled: in 2050, the Gini index, which measures income inequalities in the population, will see the situation of Senegal evolve from 92nd place occupied in 2023 (out of 169 countries measured in the world) to 10th among the most egalitarian countries in the world,” notes the document presented in the presence of the Senegalese head of state, Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko.

According to this Plan, Senegal will achieve this result by considerably increasing the income of workers and entrepreneurs in rural areas, in particular farmers, breeders, aquaculturists, due to the diversification of their sources of income and the increase in productivity of their activity. . The document highlights that the monetary poverty rate will be significantly reduced, from a level of 37% of the population in 2023 to 15% in 2050.

“The Senegalese will benefit from the same quality of education, health, access to electricity, water and sanitation, and decent housing, whether they live in the city or in a rural environment. rural, in the North as in the South, and from West to East”, we read in the National Transformation Agenda of Senegal presented in the presence also of several members of the government, members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Dakar and the private sector , as well as political actors, civil society and religious leaders.

The State also wants to reduce territorial inequities by 2050 with the development of economic centers which will gradually move away from the macrocephaly of the Dakar region, which has concentrated the country’s employment opportunities for several decades.

“In 2050, every young Senegalese, regardless of their place of birth on the national territory, will have the same access to Republican equal opportunities services, which will allow them to flourish,” specifies the public policy reference document. from Senegal.

It also aims to create economic opportunities and conditions to significantly reduce the average pay gap between men and women.
