North Korea is sending weapons and soldiers to support Russian troops, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

He made the comments on Sunday during his daily address to the nation, adding that Ukraine’s relations with its Western partners must develop to keep the opposing alliance at bay.

When we talk about greater long-term capability for Ukraine and more decisive supplies for our forces, it’s not just a list of military equipment” he said.

This is about increasing pressure on the aggressor, which will be more for Russia than it can bear. And it’s about preventing a bigger war.”

The Ukrainian leader said he would continue his “victory plan” – a proposal that contains the supposedly correct conditions for ending the war – to ensure peace.

The alliance between Moscow and Pyongyang strengthened since the spring

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has become one of Mr Putin’s key allies since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.

The claim that North Korea is sending soldiers to support Russian troops has been launched for the first time on October 11, after media reports suggested that senior officials in Kyiv and Seoul were claiming that North Korean military engineers were being deployed to help Russia target Ukraine with ballistic missiles.

Media reports also claimed that North Korean troops were fighting in Ukraine. According to Volodymyr Zelensky some are in training in Russia before being deployed soon.

The Kremlin rejected the allegations, with government spokesman Dmitry Peskov telling reporters in Moscow: “This looks like another fake news“.

Washington claims for its part that Pyongyang sent more than 16,000 containers containing munitions to Russia.
