“Three years apart, almost to the day, two teachers died at the hands of Islamist terrorists. They taught French history, knowledge of the world, and a love of our language. And we will do everything we can to protect our teachers and continue with them to fight against ignorance and fanaticism”added the Prime Minister.

Samuel Paty, aged 47, was stabbed then beheaded by Abdoullakh Anzorov, a Russian refugee of Chechen origin, on October 16, 2020 near his college. Before being killed by the police, he took responsibility for his actions by congratulating himself on having “avenge the prophet”.

The emotion caused by this attack was reignited by the assassination, on October 13, 2023, of Dominique Bernard, 57, stabbed to death by Mohammed Mogouchkov, a former student registered for Islamist radicalization, in front of his establishment. Mr. Mogouchkov, 21, born in Russia, was indicted and imprisoned by an anti-terrorism investigating judge four days after the attack which he had claimed in the name of the Islamic State organization.

This week of tributes will also be marked by the presentation on Saturday at the Sorbonne of the Samuel Paty prize aimed at rewarding class projects centered on “democratic principles and values”.
