It’s time to prepare your land for winter: here’s what you should do for your lawn, your vegetable garden and your plants

The Thanksgiving long weekend often marks the start of preparing your land for winter. Here are some tips to know what to protect and what can remain planted without risk.

– What to do for the last lawn mowing?

If it is not yet time to put away your mower, when the time comes, later in October, it is recommended not to rake fallen leaves from the field before mowing.

“It will shred the leaves, it will return to the lawn and it will nourish it,” explained horticulturist Mélanie Grégoire, in an interview with LCN on Friday.

The specialist also recommends cutting your lawn “as short as possible” for three reasons: to avoid mold with snow, to make it easier to scrape in the spring and to prevent field mice from coming.

– What to do with your vegetable garden?

Not all vegetables are at risk of perishing during the start of winter, pointed out the horticulturist, speaking in particular of carrots which can remain up to -10 degrees Celsius.

“Carrots will even improve their taste with cold. So you can mulch or put in small tunnels to harvest,” underlined Mme Gregory.

However, tomato, cucumber or even eggplant plants will need to be removed.

The month of October is also the ideal time to plant garlic using the clove which must be placed 10 centimeters deep in the earth.

– To prune or not to prune shrubs?

Regarding shrubs, the horticulturist suggests pruning them “as little as possible” before protecting them to deal with snow.

For perennials, it is possible to cut them either in the fall or in the spring.

“The advantage of cutting in spring is that the foliage will collapse with the weight of the snow and that will protect the roots,” said M.me Gregory.
